A 3-statement financial model links the income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement so that one set of assumptions drives all three and they reconcile every period. Net income flows into retained earnings and the top of the cash flow statement; closing cash returns to the balance sheet; and the balance sheet balances without a plug.

How the three statements link

Net income is the hinge: it flows from the income statement into retained earnings on the balance sheet and is the first line of the cash flow statement. The cash flow statement adjusts profit for non-cash charges and working-capital timing to reach closing cash, which becomes the cash line on the balance sheet. Debt, CAPEX, depreciation and tax schedules feed all three consistently.

The check that proves it works

The balance sheet must balance in every period without a manual plug. If assets equal liabilities plus equity everywhere, the income and cash links are correct. Every model this generator builds includes an Integrity Check sheet that runs the balance-sheet check, cash-flow tie-outs and sign checks automatically.

Frequently asked questions

What is a 3-statement financial model?

A 3-statement financial model links the income statement, the balance sheet and the cash flow statement so that one set of assumptions drives all three and they reconcile in every period. It is the foundation of DCF valuation, LBOs, budgeting and fundraising models.

How do the three statements link together?

Net income flows into retained earnings on the balance sheet and forms the starting line of the cash flow statement. The cash flow statement adjusts net income for non-cash items and working capital to reach closing cash, which becomes the cash line on the balance sheet. When the links are correct, the balance sheet balances without a plug.

What proves the three statements are correctly linked?

The balance-sheet check: if total assets equal total liabilities plus equity in every period without a hard-coded plug, the statements are genuinely linked. This generator runs that check automatically on an Integrity Check sheet.

Can I build a 3-statement model for free?

Yes. EasyFinancialModels builds a full, formula-linked 3-statement model — income statement, balance sheet, cash flow, plus DCF and IRR — as an editable Excel workbook, free for models up to 3 years with no sign-up.
